Collaboration is everything!
At the coming Terena Networking Conference (TNC2013), my colleague Harold Teunissen and I will present a new SURF broad initiative that has been started to align and scope the activities of the e-Infrastructure chain, so that SURF becomes the stepping-stone towards an integrated and tailored e-Infrastructure in the Netherlands. What SURF can do for research! The network and collaboration services of SURFnet are part of the e-Infrastructure chain. We work closely together with our chain partners in order to offer our research community a world-class operational communication and computing infrastructure to facilitate scientific research. At the beginning of 2013 all elementary e-Infrastructure functions in the Netherlands are brought under the SURF umbrella (see figure 1 below). SURF consists of four organisations that each have their own field of activity: SURFnet, SURFsara, SURFmarket and SURFshare. Furthermore, SURF and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research NWO jointly set up the Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC). The activities range from networking, high performance computing to (scientific) collaboration environments, licensing of cloud services and eScience support. When I meet with researchers in The Netherlands, I often hear that it is not always clear how SURF is organized, what the role of each of the organisations is, and what they can do for individual researchers or research groups. Besides these signals that researchers want a clear and coherent overview of the e-Infrastructure possibilities for their research, we are also aware that we have difficulties reaching a large part of the research community. As a result, the services and support that SURF offers are not yet exploited to their full potential. Join our presentation at #TNC2013 – Monday June 3, 2013 at 4pm at the session “Collaboration is everything” and learn more about collaboration and innovating together.
