The Dataverse Network is an open source repository solution for research data that takes care of long-term preservation and good archival practices, while researchers can share, keep control of and get recognition for their data. It supports the sharing of open data and enables reproducible research. The Dutch Dataverse Network was initially created by staff members at the library of Utrecht University to provide their local research community with a solution to store a wide variety of scientific data (texts and raw research data, but also video material and complete databases) in a safe and sustainable way.
Single Sign-On access
Soon, the environment needed to be extended by making it available for users of Tilburg University. The administrators of the Dutch Dataverse Network then realized that account management would become a major administrative burden, which could be minimized by linking up with SURFconext. This way identity management remains at the user’s home institution and users will have the advantage of having Single Sign-On access to Dataverse and other online solutions. In the months thereafter, other University Libraries got involved in the Dutch Dataverse Network as well and the initiative truly became a multi-centre research and collaboration effort where costs and infrastructure are being shared. With SURFconext facilitated identity management, the addition of other University – identity providers (which were already connected to SURFconext for other purposes) is as simple as tick marking the identity providers in the SURFconext management interface.
The Dutch Dataverse Network is a nice example of inter-institutional collaboration based on institutional services. In this example all people involved recognized that providing a standardized and shared environment linked to SURFconext enables easy access for the research community.
In the near future other institution based research services will follow. At the same time the Dutch Dataverse Network, DANS Easy and the 3TU Datacentrum (all connected to SURFconext) are exploring further collaboration and integration of their data services.
