The main theme of TNC2013 is innovating together. My presentation ‘Future users design seamless network connectivity and apps’ suits this theme perfectly. I elaborate on the partnerships we maintain as team Mobility & Fixed-Wireless to achieve our ultimate goal: an efficient mobile infrastructure for our users. Our users are students, educators and researchers of Dutch Higher Education and Research Institutions.
Mobile network operators
In my presentation I focus on several types of partnerships. First, we maintain partnerships with mobile network operators to build a Wi-Fi/ 4G integration, we call 4G eduroam. We see 4G complementary to Wi-Fi and by adding 4G as an access network to the eduroam infrastructure, users will be able to access their campus infrastructure anywhere and anytime. Mobile network operators, like KPN and Tele2 supply the 4G infrastructures and expertise.
Higher education and research institutions
Not only mobile network operators play a role in achieving the goal. Higher education and research institutions are also heavily involved. They implement the solution in their campus infrastructure, shape use cases and experiment with the 4G eduroam infrastructure while executing pilot projects.
Another type of partnership is our relationship with communities and the role they play in mobile app development. In 2012 we initiated Special Interest Group (SIG) Unwired. This community exists of mobile learning and research experts from Dutch Higher Education and Research Institutions. Their main goal is to exchange knowledge and best practices about mobile technologies. For SURFnet they act as a sounding board.
Edu and research apps
In 2012 we collaboratively organised two events to stimulate app development for edu and research apps. In the summerschool Mobile Apps for Higher Education and Research participants developed their own apps and learned how to implement apps in teaching, learning and doing research. The contest Apps On brought app-developers and high end and research together. We received 21 app-ideas and 6 apps will be further developed. If you would like to learn more about the Mobility & Fixed-Wireless activities and the rational behind these partnerships, I invite you to visit my presentation at TNC 2013.
