First OpenConext workshop
On June 7th 2013 SURFnet organized the first OpenConext workshop in Utrecht. To encourage participation from other National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) the meeting was organized following the TERENA Network Conference (June 3-6, Maastricht). The workshop was attended by 27 participants from 6 countries representing 10 organizations. OpenConext is an open source middleware platform that aims to bring together institutions and service providers. It is a component based system that combines identity management, group management, an application ecosystem and self service interfaces.
During the OpenConext workshop several OpenConext users presented their projects:
- JISC showed the JISC Conext project which aims to build a pilot implementation of a collaborative platform around the JISCMail service. Key components of this platform are a centralized and group focused portal, single-sign on and integration of existing applications.
- AARNet presented a demonstrator for the AARNet services shop-front. By their nature these services should be group-aware or more generally authorization rights aware.
- SURFnet demonstrated its own OpenConext implementation: SURFconext – a hub and spoke federation service extended with group management, management interfaces, a self service dashboard and a demo portal.
In a roadmap session the requirements and wishes for further development of OpenConext have been discussed with the workshop participants. Topics brought to the table included governance, (joint) application development, coding guidelines and documentation.
By organizing this type of workshops SURFnet hopes to raise the interest of new users for OpenConext and to bring together existing users in a community to foster joint development. In this way other users, either within or outside the NREN community, can profit from the SURFnet’s development efforts and vice versa. OpenConext also paves the way for international collaboration, within research and education and in public private partnerships, as one of the future projects envisaged by SURFnet is to interconnect several OpenConext instances and enable their user groups to work together over the boundaries of their own platform. If your organization is interested to use OpenConext, please join the users mailing list via: https://list.surfnet.nl/mailman/listinfo/openconext-users We are looking forward to support a growing community of OpenConext users!
